How to Turn Buyers Off header image.

Here are three seemingly small items that are guaranteed to turn off buyers that are viewing your home. 


Cleanliness: 

  • Sticky countertops, floors or walls. 

  • Pet fur, paw prints, drool marks, litter boxes, wet dog smell, pet toys/bowls/beds

  • Dirty bathrooms - toothpaste marks, toilets that need cleaning, mildew around tubs, hair on the floor 

  • Floors / carpets / rugs that aren't freshly vacuumed, swept, mopped, or stained. 

  • Windows with mildew

  • Dirty appliances (outside and inside)

  • Smells (this can include using plug-ins and air fresheners to try and cover the real problems... making it worse) 

Minor maintenance: 

  • Damaged flooring (missing transition strips between rooms, water, warped, chips, cracks, stains, rips, grout, seriously worn, etc)

  • Damaged baseboards and trim 

  • Doors: closet door that isn't on the tracks, rusty front door, damaged cupboards, room door that don't properly open / close 

  • The entryway full of scuffs and dents on the walls 

  • Loose / poorly functioning fixtures. Lights without bulbs 

  • DIY repairs 

Clutter / mess: 

  • full countertops in kitchen and bath 

  • Dining tables covered with stuff

  • Living rooms in disarray and filled with anything but the main furniture pieces

  • Bedrooms without beds that are made, and anything but the main furniture pieces 

  • Basements with nothing boxed up (ie: are these guys even thinking of moving?)

Think of this stuff as an everyday mess you might have grown to live with. Maybe you're even blind to it. 


They become utter turn-offs to buyers that want you to have prepared your property  like the King of England is coming round. 


I hope this didn't turn anyone's stomachs too much.
